SUPER excited to release my very first Film ArtScore; a Score & Performance of a Graphic Score that's written into Film format. SEISMIC SHIFT for mixed brass is the 5th in a series of protest works and was written as a graphic artscore to aid a larger community effort. SEISMIC SHIFT protests against seismic blasting in the Southern Ocean and takes a stand against offshore gas exploration.
Seismic blasting is deadly for marine life. Due to the way sound travels underwater, the blast sounds are functionally louder than the Krakatoa eruption of 1883 - the loudest sound ever recorded. The blasts are delivered over concentrated periods, one every 10 seconds. Pygmy blue whales are deafened and driven away. Starfish, scallops, oysters and zooplankton are killed, unable to escape the shock. The immune systems of lobsters are altered. The food chain is drastically affected. Marine farming stocks are obliterated, and this was originally proposed for an area of 77,000 square kilometres including a Commonwealth marine park along the Victorian and Tasmanian coast. The protest effort has been long and hard-fought, but communities have succeeded in affecting the withdrawal of one of the largest proposals for seismic testing by TGS. One company down, two proposals to go. We haven't won this yet.
The paper copy of the SEISMIC SHIFT score was created through mixed media processes including graffiti art, digital art and video. Graffiti art references were crucial to this score, to honour my lost friends who, committed to the art-form and their desperate need for self-expression, illegally pushed this once rebellious genre at a time in the 1980s when incredible youth artworks were produced by the voiceless and unheard, but sadly not yet celebrated by the public. The film artscore is projected in the artspace for the players to work from in performance. This allows the performers to roam the space while playing and provides the opportunity for the audience to view the score while listening to the work.
This video is the result of the world premiere in Brunswick on the 24th of August 2024, performed by the commissioning ensemble: Thomas Grayden, Harvey de Koster, Joshua Delfer, Michael Lo and Naomi Dickers, with co-commissioner Luke Barson as MC and co-organiser of the event. Sincere thanks to IgnightLAB for their generous funding of the creation of this work.
